Internet Security: VPNs

The Web

Off the get go, this article and topic does stray away from the fitness mission here at FitLife CV, but I vow to bring life bettering info to you and this I exactly what I aim to do here. The internet is a great and amazing breakthrough in the history of mankind. Endless articles, books, and any kind of information you can imagine at your fingertips. The entirety of the planet’s knowledge is available at a click. Crazy, right? Everyone knows this already, but it is the not so amazing part of the internet that is just as important. We use the internet for very important things like banking, shopping, and even learning about your favorite fitness info here at FitLife CV. With people doing tasks such as these, privacy and security is becoming ever more important. The best way to fully protect yourself in today’s internet world is a VPN, or Virtual Private Network. You may not be so worried about it just yet, but I will highlight the importance because until recently, when I began my own online business, I was not huge into the whole internet safety.

Surfing Security

VPNs have been around for years now but only recently have become more popular among everyone. Before, it was much more common to see big businesses and companies using a VPN. This is because they have large amounts of information that is sensitive and to protect it, they would invest in a VPN. These companies were large with value, making them a more obvious target for hackers. Who is to say though, that a business’s info and your bank info is any different?

How VPNs Work

A VPN is very simple. This is how it works. So, everyone has an IP address. This is your device’s special number for identification. You use this number to communicate with other websites. These websites you are connecting to are just an IP address that is converted into words, like Facebook.com. To communicate with a website, your device’s ID is sent through your server, something like your Wi-Fi, and then communicates with the website’s server. In this process your data is not entirely safe and can be “picked” out of the air and downloaded or stolen. This is an issue when it comes to online banking or shopping because that info is very important. If someone were to get a hold of it while it was communicating with the target server, you could have real big problems. This is where VPNs really shine. It is basically adding in other line of security by taking your information from your server and encrypting it immediately until it gets to theirs. Your data is then encrypted through their process and is outputted to the target server or IP you are communicating with. I will throw a picture in below to make it easier to visualize.

This stops the ability for hackers to read the data you are transmitting through the web and in turn stops them in their tracks because they will only be able to see the VPNs’ IP and random encoded information. This is the general idea behind a VPN and is why they are important in today’s world.

More Benefits

A VPN can also help with some other things as well. Let us say you are in a country in which you are not allowed to view certain videos or services. Netflix for example does not allow some countries to watch shows on Netflix. Since these VPN servers are located in the U.S. in most cases, they trick the target server, like Netflix, into thinking you are in the U.S. This then allows you to watch region specific shows or services on top of keeping your info encrypted. One more benefit is, using this same location changing aspect of VPNs, getting you better prices on websites like hotel. Some Hotels change rates based on where your IP is listing you are located. If your IP shows you are in the U.S., they will offer lower rates just based on location alone. This can apply for other prices etc. as well.

VPN Providers

Not all VPNs are created equal. Some have the ability to record your data. This basically means if for some reason the government wants to go the VPN and demand your info, they have no records of anything for them to take. Also make sure to note that some VPNs can be shady and track your browsing data etc. and sell it to advertising companies. It is important to know these things and not get yourself wrapped up in a bad VPN service.

Nord VPN

Nord VPN is my personal recommendation. There is a long list of reasons why I use this VPN over most others I had researched. I will list a few things that really make this a strong VPN and check it out if you are interested.

Servers

There are roughly 5000 servers across a total of 59 countries. This makes it easy to find and connect to Nord VPN servers no matter where you are.

Headquarters in Panama

This is important because Panama does not sit inside surveillance borders or jurisdiction. Nord will not be required to record user’s data for the viewing of government needs etc.

No Usage Cap

With no cap to the data usage, you rack up, there is no need to worry about the amount of data you upload or download when using Nord like other VPNs.

Speed Tests

Often VPNs will slow your connection down significantly due to the communication from server to server. Unlike other VPNs, Nord has been known to maintain good strong speeds that will not affect internet usage whatsoever.

If you are interested in checking out Nord VPN as well as supporting me and FitLifeCV, you can click the deal below or check out my resource page to get started with your VPN from Nord there! Thanks!
